Effective Ways Singing be Better

1. Own Your Own Voice

While it’s great to find characteristics of vocalists you like and emulate them, to some extent it’s important to own your own voice. Each voice is a beautiful tool and will sound differently to everyone. There are very few vocalists who don’t have critics. Think of how many professional singers have “unconventional voices”. Love the way you sound and be responsible for taking care of and learning how to use your own unique voice. Forget your shyness and embrace your individual style.

2. Learn to Breathe

Not knowing how to properly control your breath is a huge mistake. Nerves can make you hold your breath, as can many other things. However, the more aware you are of your breath, and the muscles associated with it, the better your singing will sound. A common mistake is to hold one’s breathe while singing. It takes practice and being conscious of your breath to know when in the song to pause and inhale, and how to appropriately exhale during sections of the song. Constant, aware exhalation is crucial to being able to hold long notes and hit the high notes you want. It’s impossible to achieve your full range while holding or restricting the breath. Learn to control your diaphragm and practice breathing exercises regularly.

3. Sing to Yourself

Mirrors are also a great tool to help you to have more control over your voice. By being more aware of your body’s posture, you can help yourself to become more aware of your breathing. If you experiment with your facial muscles, posture and breathe, you can determine what helps you personally to sing your best. Notice how different notes change as you experiment with different posture, mouth expressions and neck positioning.

4. Take Great Care of Yourself

Drinking, smoking, yelling and bad diet can all be culprits of a strained voice. Try eating foods that nourish your body, and therefore nourish your voice! Also try drinking teas instead of alcohol. There are many herbs and plants, including foods that will help to sooth your voice and your nerves. Your voice is as delicate as any instrument and will respond according to how you treat it.
